Das Finale der Tetris-Weltmeisterschaft 2023

Ich musste eben noch mal nachschauen und tatsächlich belegt Tetris auch in diesem Jahr einen der vorderen Plätze, wenn es um das meistverkaufte Spiel geht, genauer gesagt Platz 3. Zumindest laut Statista und scheinbar die Version, die mittlerweile zu EA gehört, was dann auch die Version für Smartphones sein dürfte.

Was ich auch nicht wusste: Tetris kommt eigentlich aus Russland, denn Alexei Paschitnow hat die allererste Version bereits 1984 gebastelt. Und wenn wir schon dabei sind: Das Spiel an sich hat sich weltweit über 425 Mal verkauft und wurde bisher für über 65 Plattformen herausgebracht.

Aber nicht für alle war Tetris ein durchschlagender Erfolg. Atari hatte ebenfalls eine Version in der Mache, aber gar nicht die Rechte dafür. Davon bekam dann Nintendo – die hatten die Rechte nämlich – Wind und ging natürlich vor Gericht. Am Ende gewann man und Atari durfte sowohl unzählige Spiele vernichten als auch die Millionen, die bereits in Marketing und Entwicklung geflossen sind, abschreiben.

Und offenbar gibt es bis heute Weltmeisterschaften mit dem Spiel. 2023 fand das Finale in Portland statt und wir können nachfolgend schauen, wie das so ablief:

At the 2023 CTWC, over 100 Classic Tetris pros gathered at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo to vie for 48 seeds. Qualifying consisted of 2 hour attempts where players would try to rack up as many great scores as possible. In a 48-seed bracket, the Top 16 seeds earn a bye out of Round 0, while the bottom 32-seeds compete for a spot in Round 1.
