The Mountain Goats veröffentlichen Mark On You, eine Rache-Fantasie und die letzte Single aus ihrem aktuellem Album Bleed Out. Bleed Out, produziert von Alicia Bognanno, ist ein cineastisches Erlebnis, inspiriert von Action-Filmen aus den 60er, 70er und 80er Jahren.

Über den Song sagt tMG Mastermind John Darnielle: „Mark On You was the point where I knew where I was going in the writing of the album: songs with physical situations and palpable threats, something visceral for the tail end of lockdown. Producer Alicia Bognanno ran wild on this one, one of the first ones I sent her; she shapes the sound with an intensely sick riff over the chorus, teasing out the extensions and expanding the blasting surface. Sickest Wurster beat, all pocket no seams. Enjoy!”

Vielleicht geht es euch wie John Darnielle: In den Tiefen des pandemischen Winters Ende 2020 verbrachte der The Mountain Goats-Frontmann die Zeit zu Hause in North Carolina mit dem Anschauen von Actionfilmen und fand Trost in vertrauten Tropen und weichgespültem Eskapismus. Aber man ist nicht wirklich wie John Darnielle, es sei denn, zu den Actionfilmen, in denen man Trost fand, gehörten französische Thriller wie „Mesrine“ aus dem Jahr 2008, alte italienische Poliziottesco-Filme oder das Donald Pleasence-Vehikel „The Freakmaker“ von 1974. Oder es sei denn, das Anschauen dieser Filme brachte euch zurück in eure prägenden Tage als Künstler, als das Anschauen von Filmen euer Songwriting und eure simplen Home-Recordings befeuerte und vertonte und euch wiederum dazu inspirierte, euer 20. Album zu einem Songzyklus über den Reiz – und die Vergeblichkeit – der Rache zu machen. Aber es ist keine Schande, nicht wie John Darnielle zu sein; das sind nur wenige Menschen.

„On earlier tapes you’ll find these sound samples“, sagt Darnielle. „‘Oh, where’s this sample from?’ It’s from whatever movie I was watching while I was sitting around on the couch with a guitar. I watch a movie, somebody’d say something that I like the sound of and I’ll write that phrase down. And then I would pause the VHS, write the song, record the song on a boombox, and go back to watching my movie. I got into doing that again; I just kept watching action movies and taking notes on what they’re about and on what the governing plots and tropes and styles are. It was very much like an immersion method acting technique.”
